GTS-21, also known as DMXBA or DMBX-anabaseine, is an experimental drug that has been studied for its therapeutical potential in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders.

It is a partial agonist of one of the acetylcholine receptor subtypes, namely the α7 nicotinic receptor, activation of which has been linked to neuroprotective effects and cognitive function improvement.

GTS-21 has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective effects in various animal models of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, an improvement in cognitive function has also been observed.

Currently, it is also being investigated for the treatment of schizophrenia and nicotine addiction. In a study on patients with schizophrenia, the drug has improved several measures of cognitive function, including attention and working memory, without causing significant side effects.

Another study results suggest that GTS-21 can act as a cognitive enhancer for healthy people as well, improving attention and memory performance, and augmenting the effects of caffeine on cognition.

Side effects

GTS-21 seems to be well tolerated up to 450 mg/day, however, some adverse effects might occur.

Dosage

GTS-21 is taken orally, with 75-150 mg doses up to three times a day.

Due to its irritant effect on mucous membranes, it is advised not to swallow the powder, but use capsules instead. Also, it is better not to let the powder come in contact with the skin, as it can dye it yellow.
