Methylene Blue was synthesized a blue dye for textiles in the late 1800’s. Soon, it became the first synthetic drug to be used in humans – it was used for the treatment of malaria.

Methylene Blue is currently being studied as potential therapy for mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurodegenerative disorders that share a common problem with mitochondrial function. As a nootropic, methylene blue readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. It improves mitochondrial efficiency and respiration, acts as an antioxidant, and increases brain cell lifespan, which results in improved memory and mood. Research shows that methylene blue is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with a preference for muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, which means that it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, and making it more available in the brain. Methylene blue may also be effective for bipolar disorder symptoms if combined with lamotrigine (a mood stabilizer).

It is important to note that methylene blue is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) with preference for MAO-A, however in larger doses, it inhibits MAO-B as well. This effect becomes significant at about 2 mg/kg.

Benefits of taking methylene blue

  • improved short-term and long-term memory;
  • enhanced mood and antidepressant effect;
  • boost in energy;
  • rejuvenation;
  • increased comprehension of complex material;
  • enhanced learning;
  • positive perception of events;
  • anxiolytic effect;
  • improved sleep;
  • increased self-confidence.

 Interactions

  • other MAOIs;
  • SSRI / SNRI;
  • tricyclic antidepressants;
  • stimulants.

Side effects

Side effects of methylene blue are rare with doses under 2 mg/kg.

  • stomach pain;
  • chest pain;
  • dizziness;
  • sweating;

Dosage

It is safer to start with 0.5 mg/kg and observe the results.
