Developed in Russia in 1969, picamilon has been used as a medication to treat has been used since 1986 as a pharmaceutical in Russia to treat attention, memory, and learning issues as well as brain blood circulation loss, traumatic brain injury, neurological deficits in chronic alcoholism and other disorders. While it is currently somewhat recognized by the nootropic community, it is largely underrated due to how subtle its effects feel in comparison with another Russian invention – phenibut.

The idea behind picamilon design is brilliant in its simplicity – in order to make the blood-brain barrier more permeable towards the  inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA),  its particle is linked to that of niacin (also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid). The link between the two is assumed to break down upon its entrance into the brain. That said, taking GABA and niacin as a stack will not produce the same effect.

GABA activates GABA receptors producing an anxiolytic response, while niacin acts as a vasodilator relaxing constricted blood vessels and increasing cerebral blood flow and thus enhancing GABA activity. Furthermore, niacin itself is vital for the synthesis of serotonin, which also accounts for the anxiolytic action of picamilon.

It is currently apparent that low GABA levels lead to anxiety, depression and insomnia and restoring the GABA – glutamate balance relieves the overstimulated neurons and promotes a positive mood. As a GABA-ergic subatance, picamilon is unique in that in enhances cerebral blood flood, and more efficiently so than piracetam or vinpocetine. Also, the niacin component enhances cell metabolism and oxygen supply in the brain, resulting in an improvement in short-term and long-term memory.

Picamilon has been shown to normalize serotonin and dopamine content, and dopamine uptake in the brain, which further explains its effect on memory formation, attention, focus, and cognition.

It has been valued by those who seek relief from anxiety which is not accompanied by a feeling of inebriation or sedation.

Benefits of taking picamilon

  • enhanced long-term and short-term memory;
  • improved focus and attention;
  • substantial relief in anxiety without sedation or inebriation;
  • boost in mood;
  • increased mental energy and resilience;
  • enhanced sleep quality;
  • improved athletic performance;
  • possible attenuation of the symptoms of depression and ADHD.

Side-effects

  • headaches;
  • nausea;
  • lowered blood pressure;
  • dizziness.

Dosage

Picamilon is usually taken orally two or three times a day. A typical single anxiolytic dose is 50 mg, however, when one wishes to experience more of its cognitive enhancing, mildly stimulating side, 100 mg would serve this purpose better.
