The effect of Semax on the human body:

  • Causes the formation of new neurons and new connections between existing neurons. This is especially true in the hippocampus, cortex and forebrain – areas essential for learning, memory and thought processes.
  • Decreases the distribution of enkephalins. Enkephalins are pentapeptides found in the brain and spinal cord, among other areas. They play a role in memory, learning, emotional behavior and pain sensation.
  • Protects the nervous system from oxidative damage.
  • Influences the expression of certain genes related to the immune and vascular systems.

Some studies suggest that it may help partially protect the brain from various types of damage, such as oxidative stress, inflammation and even strokes caused by cardiovascular disease. Adding Semax to conventional therapy accelerates the restoration of damaged brain functions, especially those related to body function.

In a study of people with reduced cerebral blood flow (cerebral vascular insufficiency), Semax was found to reduce overall brain damage, as well as reduce the risk of additional strokes in the future. In addition, Semax was generally well tolerated, meaning that very few or no side effects were reported.

Semax in the study helped control the severity of optic nerve disease and reduced the extent of brain tissue damage caused by experimentally induced strokes in rats.

Memory improvement

According to one study conducted in Russia on a group of healthy men, Semax improved memory and attention during extreme or high-stress tasks. Another brain study found that Semax increased neuronal activity in a region of the brain that is involved in episodic memory and other cognitive functions.

Semax increases the rate of learning and stimulates exploratory behavior in mice. The findings in animal studies, however, are not always confirmed in humans.

Stress and neurogenesis

According to research, Semax can counteract some of the negative physical and psychological effects of stress. Semax prevents some common behavioral changes associated with certain physical and developmental stressors in rats. Other studies have shown that Semax can counteract some of the biological changes associated with increased stress, such as increased production of cells responsible for immune system inflammation (such as macrophages) and other potentially harmful compounds. This suggests that Semax may help protect some major organs, such as the liver and spleen, from stress-related damage.

Semax also has properties that may be helpful in treating ADHD. These include increasing attention and improving memory, as well as increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that are often at lower levels in ADHD patients (such as dopamine). And indeed, some doctors are using Semax to treat ADHD despite the fact that it is not in the official indications for the drug.
