4-fluorophenibut, also known as F-phenibut, is a fluorinated derivative of phenibut, a neuropsychiatric drug of the gabapentinoid class widely known for its anxiolytic and nootropic properties. In comparison with its parent compound, 4-fluorophenibut has been found to bind to GABAB receptor with a significantly higher affinity and in this regard is more similar to baclofen than phenibut. In a manner similar to that of other gabapentinoids 4-fluorophenibut may also act on the α2δ-1 site of voltage-gated calcium channels, by which it would inhibit the release of multiple excitatory neurotransmitters, including glutamate, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, and substance P.

According to anecdotal reports, the subjective effects of 4-fluorophenibut share many similarities with those of phenibut; however, there are a few aspects of the experience that distinguish them from one another.

One of such differences lies in their action duration, which is shorter in the case of 4-fluorophenibut. Given its faster onset of effects, it can be argued that 4-fluorophenibut affords more flexibility in dosing relative to phenibut. As a more potent GABAB agonist, the headspace of 4-fluorophenibut is characterized by milder stimulation and more readily noticeable relaxation, and as such, it may be considered superior as a sleep aid. While many people find that phenibut greatly encourages socializing and promotes extroversion, 4-fluorophenibut is sometimes described as its low-key, laid-back alternative, with more pronounced feelings of inner peace and contentment, optimal for solitary leisure activities and switching to slow-life mode. Due to its comparatively less energizing profile, it might be better suited to engaging in intellectual tasks so that its potential for focus enhancement can be fully utilized.

Some individuals prefer 4-fluorophenibut over phenibut as they associate its use with fewer adverse reactions or appreciate that its effects wear off in a relatively smooth manner.
