Huperzine-A is a compound extracted from the herbs of the Huperziceae family. It is essentially an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor – it prevents that enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, thus increasing the amount of this neurotransmitter.
Huperzine-A supports brain cell mitochondria, protecting them from free radical damage by acting as an antioxidant. It also bolsters neuron resistance to beta-amyloid induced dysfunction that could potentially lead to neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, by acting as an NMDA receptor antagonist, it prevents glutamate excitotoxicity which has been associated with brain cell degeneration. Huperzine A also boosts the synthesis of NGF (nerve growth factor) which plays a critical role in brain cell development, maintenance and repair.
Products that combine huperzine A with certain drugs used for treating Alzheimer’s disease are being studied for their efficacy, as they might potentially have comparable therapeutic benefits at lower doses and, therefore, cause fewer side effects.
Huperzine A is often used by patients with Myasthenia Gravis.
Based on animal and human studies, huperzine A can be considered safe. It is generally well tolerated, with rarely any side effects at dosages routinely supplemented with.
